My favorite banjo for general playing is a late 70s model Aria Pro II archtop. I looked long and hard for this particular instrument. For some reason the memory of playing one of these banjos at 'Pick 'n Grin' in Knoxville in the late 70s has always stuck in my mind. I promised myself that one day I would own one of these banjos.
In 1995, I decided the time was right. Of course, times are much different now and the Pro II, while a fine instrument, is not one of choice for most bluegrass musicians. I did manage to find one though at 'Turtle Hill Banjo Co.' of Bryantown, MD. I bought it "sight unseen" and as soon as I picked it up and strumed a few licks, I was transported back to being a lowly grad student at UTK, visiting 'Pick 'n Grin' and marveling at the feel and power of what I consider to be a magnificent instrument.
As you might determine from the above, I like the sound for both bluegrass and frailing. It is a very substantial instrument and is "comfortable" and easy to play with lots of power.
Aria still markets banjos. Check out their current models.
