John Rice Irwin's Museum of Appalachia contains a collection of more than 30 authentic log cabins and buildings including a gristmill, a school, a church, barns, smokehouses, and cabins--all dating from the late 1700's to the early 1900's. Gardens are surrounded by split rail fences; cattle, mules, sheep and goats graze in the pastures near a huge cantilevered barn.

In addition to the hundreds of extensive collections of southern mountain artifacts and memorabilia housed in the large Display Barn, the Museum of Appalachia includes a 65-acre pioneer-type farm with numerous farm animals and domestic fowl.
