CREDENTIALS vita - (complete version)
I am a science educator by trade and am especially interested in science education reform. I have worked as a secondary educator for approximately 20 years and as a university/college professional for about 15 years (some of these years are concurrent). After completing my undergraduate work at the University of TN Knoxville with B.S. degrees in Forestry and Natural Science Education, I began my career at Westwood Jr. High School in Manchester, TN in 1970. I taught physical science there and served as the chair of the science department through the school year 1976-77. During my stay in Manchester I completed my M.A. and Ed.S degrees in Secondary Science Education at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, TN. In 1977, I entered the doctoral program at UTK and completed that in June of 1979 with a Curriculum and Instruction -Secondary Science Education Emphasis.
From 1979 through 1987 I taught chemistry, biology, and physical science at Feldwood (Fulton County Public Schools) and Shiloh (Gwinnett County Public Schools) high schools in the Atlanta area. I have worked in higher education beginning as a Visiting Assistant Professor at UTK (1987-90) and then as Assistant and Associate Professor at Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro, KY (Secondary Education Specialist, Director of Student Teaching, and Educational Technology Specialist) 1990-93.
From 1993-99, I served as a science education consultant with Oak Ridge National Laboratory while teaching in the public schools in Cobb County, GA (North Cobb and Harrison High Schools). At ORNL I have directed the Elementary Science Leadership Institute - sponsored by the National Science Foundation (1993-96) - and the ARC Teacher Leadership Institute- (1995-98) sponsored by the Appalachian Regional Commission. During the summer of 1998, I added the Internet Tutorial Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education (1998-99). The Institutes at ORNL have also involved my serving as Professor of Record for graduate students completing programs at UTK.
During
the school year 1998-99, I served as adjunct faculty at UT Knoxville in
addition to my consulting at ORNL. My duties included instructing an
elementary science methods course to interns and pre-interns at Sarah Moore Greene
Elementary and teaching a graduate level science curriculum course for UTK
during the spring and summer semesters of 1999. During the summer semesters of
2003 and 2004, I was fortunate to be able to again work with UT Knoxville
in teaching graduate level elementary science methods courses and science
special topics courses. This served as a nice complement to my work at Lindsey
Wilson College and Shorter College.
Fall
1999 - Spring 2004 - Lindsey Wilson
College - in Columbia, KY - In addition to
teaching capstone Methods and Classroom Management courses, I served as division
chair from Fall Semester 2000 - Spring Semester 2003. For the school year
2003-04, I served as Institutional EPSB Programs Coordinator in addition
to teaching duties.
Fall 2004 - Spring 2008 - Shorter College - in Rome, Georgia. In addition to serving as Professor of Education, I filled the role of Chair of the Department of Education in 2004-05 and Dean of the School of Education and Social Sciences from Fall Semester 2005 through Spring Semester 2008.
Fall 2008 – present - I accepted an offer to join the faculty at Young Harris College in Young Harris, Georgia. In addition to serving as Professor of Education, I will be serving as Director of Teacher Preparation overseeing the development and implementation of a full Teacher Preparation Program as the college grows in its new (December 2008) baccalaureate organization.
