Physical Science
Spring Term 1998
Grading Policies and Expectations
Dr. Brown

The goal of this and all classes is to make all students more educated citizens so that they are able to make practical and beneficial decisions.

Grading: According to the standards established by the Cobb County School System, the following grading scale will be applied:

A = 92 - 100
B = 83 - 91
C = 74 - 82
D = 70 - 73
F = 69 and below
I = Incomplete

In this class the grades are divided as follows:
Tests = 35% (The semester-long project will count as one test)
Daily (homework, labs, notebooks, quizzes) = 55%
Final Exam = 10%

Points of Interest:

** Tests may be given on any day.
** All homework will be considered late if handed in after it has been collected at the beginning of the period on the day due. This will result in a loss of points.
** Assignments will be accepted if turned in late, however there will be a resulting loss of 25% per late day.
** The homework hotline number is 314. There is no excuse for not knowing the homework for any given night.

Final Exam: This exam comes from old tests, quizzes and various other assignments. It is expected that you keep a science folder with all assignments so that this may serve as a source of study for exams as well as to provide a means of keeping up with grades should there be a question.

Absences: For an excused absence, you will have 3 days after you return to school to schedule make-up work. Please check with me at the end of the class (or before or after school in Room 416) for make-up assignments. BEWARE!! If you do not speak with me by the end of your third day back you will receive a zero for all work missed, including any tests or quizzes.

Missed Lab Exercises: If you miss a laboratory exercise, you will go to the library, read a SCIENCE current event article, make a photocopy of that article and do a 1/2 - 2/3 page summary/reaction of the article. Make sure that you get a copy of the missed lab. The summary/reaction is due within 5 days of the missed lab or a grade of ZERO will be entered for the missing assignment.

Passes: Please understand that passes to leave the classroom will be issued in emergency situations only!

Classroom Expectations

1. Be in your assigned seat when the bell rings and stay there until further instructed.
2. Come prepared. This means that everyday you arrive with the needed materials (science folder, pen or pencil, textbook).
3. Do not speak while others are speaking. It is rude, disrespectful and interferes with other students' right to learn and my right to teach.
4. Absolutely no food or drink!!! This is a science classroom and due to labs and the nature of this course, food and drink may pose serious health hazards.
5. Listen the first time instructions are given. If you pay attention, you will have no problems.
6. If it is not yours, do not touch it!
7. No notes of a personal nature.
