Course Standards

TOPIC: Energy/Work
1. Energy and Work
distinguish between kinetic and potential energy
describe how energy can be changed from one form to another
apply the Law of Conservation of Energy
define and calculate work
 
2. Temperature and Heat
recognize the difference between the motion of the particles of an object and the motion of the object itself
relate changes in particle motion to thermal energy and temperature
compare and contrast heat and temperature
 
3. Measuring and Using Thermal Energy
relate specific heat to the rate of temperature change in an object
apply concept of specific heat to lab situation/setting
identify the 3 methods of thermal energy transfer and cite examples of each
compare and contrast effectiveness of various heat insulators and conductors
describe and/or construct models of heating and cooling systems
identify problems associated with thermal pollution and possible solutions to these problems
explain how heat is used to do work using examples such as engines: 4-stroke, steam, etc.

Explain the use of machines to make work easier
compare and contrast the 6 types of simple machines
calculate mechanical advantage for each type of simple machine
calculate efficiency for machines
describe the relationship between work, power, and time

1. Describing Motion
use the concept of reference objects to describe a moving object
describe speed as a rate
perform calculations with speed, time, and distance
draw and interpret distance-time graphs
distinguish vectors and scalers
2. Velocity
differentiate between speed and velocity
measure and calculate speed
 
3. Force and Motion
recognize forces
identify connection between unbalanced forces and the resulting changes in velocity
describe the effect of inertia and mass
state and demonstrate in a lab setting Newton's 1st Law of Motion
describe the effect of gravity on different objects

1. Accelerated Motion
draw and interpret speed-time graphs
describe the relationship between force, mass and acceleration

TOPIC: Waves and Sound
Draw and label parts of a wave
identify properties of waves and wave motion
use the relationship between frequency, wavelength and wavespeed in simple calculations
compare and contrast transverse and compressional waves
analyze wave interactions with matter including reflection, refraction, diffraction and interference
recognize the relationships between amplitude and loudness and frequency and pitch
relate the efficiency of sound transfer through a medium to density (temperature) and medium type
cite examples of Doppler shift in sound

 

 
TOPIC: Light and Color
contrast electromagnetic waves with other types of waves
describe the arrangement of electromagnetic waves on the electromagnetic spectrum
list applications for each type of electromagnetic wave in current technology
differentiate between opaque, translucent, and transparent materials, giving examples of each
explain how the human eye perceives color
distinquish between light colors (additive primaries) and pigment colors (subtractive primaries)

explain how images are formed in mirrors
differentiate between convex, concave, and plane mirrors
describe how images are formed in various lenses
cite examples of everyday uses of lenses

demonstrate proficiency in the use of science process skills in laboratory and/or field activities involving observation, classification, communication, metric measurement, prediction, inference, identifying variables, formulating hypotheses, controlling variables, making operational definitions, designing investigations, experimenting, collecting qualitative and/or quantitative data, constructing a data table, graphing, analyzing and interpreting data and/or drawing conclusions.
produce written reports of laboratory and/or field activities in accepted formats and use precise language for presentations of procedure, tables of data, graphs, analytical methods, results and analyses of error.
