Two classroom management tip that may keep students from being out of their
seats and disrupting other classmates:
1. Students were not allowed to throw trash away until they were dismissed
from class.
2. If a pencil broke or a pen ran out of ink, students were to raise
their hand with the broken writing instrument in hand and I would trade
them for one that would write. By using this clueing technique, no
words had to be spoken and the rest of the class stayed on task.

Behavior Incentive
Encourage positive student behavior with an easy-to-manage incentive.
Think of an incentive in the formof a sentence, such as "An extra recess
sure would be nice!" Then, on the chalkboard, draw a series of blanks to
represent each word in the sentence- one blank per letter. Each time
you observe students exhibiting a positive classroom behavior, write a
letter in one blank. When all the blanks are filled and the
incentive is revealed, reward the students accordingly. You can count
on students trying to guessthe class reward as they practice positive classroom
behaviors!

Colorful Signals
Quietly monitor small-group noise levels with plastic cups. For
each group, stack a yellow cup between a green and a red cup as shown.
The green cup stays on top of a stack unless a group generates too much
noise. If this happens, caution the group by moving its yellow cup
back on top of its stack. Put the green cup back on top of the stack
when the noise level becomes acceptable. Or temporarily place
the red cup on top of the stack to signal a no-talk period. No doubt
about it! These colorful cups are stacked for success!

I Got Your Note!
To ensure that you receive and keep track of parents' notes, have them
slip 'em in the mailbox. Position a decorated mailbox in a spot near
your door. When children have notes for you, have them place them
in the mailbox and raise the flag. Then they'll be ready when
you are! Hopefully no more notes lost on the desk.

Good-Bye Glue!
Here is a real timesaver to rid desks and tables of stuck-on glue.
Simply spray the surface with warm water or cleaner, wait a minute or two,
and then use an ice scraper to scrape away the mess.

Portfolio Pictures
A picture is worth a thousand words, so what better way to save student
projects than with photos? Send a letter home to parents explaining
that samples of student work will be collected throughout the year to document
youngsters' learning. Further explain that some completed assignments
do not lend themselves to easy storage, but that photos are great substitutes.
Invite each family to donate one roll of a specified type of camera film
to be used for this purpose. Their contributions will help make portfolio
management a snap!
