Most of us have been asked this question at the grocery store. Do you want paper or plastic? If you are concerned about the environment, you may question the use of paper because of the trees that have to be cut down in order to manufacture the bags. On the other hand, by using plastic that is not biodegradable, you are helping to fill up our land fills. Is there a good answer to this question?

Recently at an inner-city school, an assembly was held to get the students excited about the upcoming school fund raiser. The assembly included opportunities for several lucky kids to stand in the money booth and collect as many flying dollars as possible in one minute. A few other students got to spin the wheel of fortune. The presenter indicated to the rest of the students that if they were able to sell a certain amount of her products they too would have the opportunity to win cash or other prizes. From this fund raiser the school does have the opportunity to receive some funds to add to their yearly budget. However the products the students are asked to sell are things like $7.00 rolls of wrapping paper or $10.00 tins of flavored popcorn. How realistic is it that the majority of students are on free and reduced lunches and living in poverty will be able to sell products like this? Why get their hopes up for winning $80.00 on the wheel of fortune when it is very unlikely they will be able to sell enough products? The students who will be able to sell the products probably have a lesser need for the cash prizes. What is this teaching kids about the value of money? What message is being sent to the poorer students when students with higher socio-economic status have an unfair advantage and are winning all the prizes? Keep in mind though, the school as a whole is receiving monetary benefits.
Do the lower socio-economic level students benefit from this fund raiser in the long run?

You have just found out that you have Chronic Kidney Failure, which there is no cure, but there are treatments. The first treatment is to have a Kidney Transplant, but there are no guarntee that the kidney will function in your body. And then you may go on a transplant list if you don't have a family member to donate you a kidney.Second, go on Hemo Dialysis for four hours a day three days a week. Third, do PD which you do every day or night you make that choice. And the last choice is to DIE!
I know a lot of people will not understand the treatments I gave ,but
those are the facts. You might think that this is not a dilemma, but thousands
of people have to make this choice, and some make I think the wrong decision.
WHAT CHOICE WOULD YOU MAKE?

Institute for Global Ethics - This site has a search option to look up dilemmas on certain topics. I would recommend the site for a more mature audience (high school).
Pathfinder for Bioethical Dilemmas - This site has an assignment where student research a bioethical dilemmas. Many sites are provided for additional information.

Global Ethics Website - Many dilemmas are usually environmental related; however, this website incorporates not only environmental dilemmas but also ethical dilemmas. This would be a great site to gather information for a debate in an older classroom.
