Narrative
It is always a pleasure to be driving to Marietta, GA for either the spring or fall festival. This year was no different. As I left Columbia, KY, there was much anticipation of getting to hear good friends perform the great music we all love so much. Billy and Faye Johnson always have a well-organized festival and with the sound provided by Gene and Johnnie Daniel and MC work of Mike Fleming, one knows the programs will be professional and on-time.
The spring '01 festival provided a couple of very pleasant surprises. The Suggins Brothers have a new gospel cd release that Mike Gibbs had already mentioned to me and as I understand it, I have copy 01. Straight ahead bluegrass gospel done in the North Georgia tradition - you will have to check this cd out! (title to be added).

On Saturday afternoon, the crowd was treated to the clawhammer banjo stylist James Watson as he joined Mark Thrower and Hi Grass. James is the 'featured' artist of this year's Marietta Bluegrass web site and is truly a national treasure in my eyes. In addition, he is featured in the 'archives' of the North Georgia Bluegrass Chronicles. You owe it to yourself to check out the archives feature if you have not done so. With Mark and Hi Grass featuring James and his banjo, it was not difficult to journey back a few years to 'Doodle' and James and the Golden River Grass. A special moment for sure!

In addition to the great stage shows, there was also the jamming that goes on for hours in the buildings of the North Georgia Fairground. All the usual 'suspects' were present and it was difficult to get around to take in as much as I would have liked. Saturday afternoon also provided something not common as of late in North Georgia - thunder storms! However, those seemed to only drive the music faster and to provide a backdrop for socializing in the climate controlled facilities.

Another point of interest... I got to hear about a great trip to Argentina by Mr. Wiley Rakestraw...he had great pictures as well. I am envious...

Overall, another great festival by the Johnsons. They also told me about their new endeavor...selling tapes and cds. They are now running their 'general store' of music recently acquired from Mr. Carl Queen of Atteiram record fame. Check out their selections at the various festivals.
