______________________________________________________________________________
Subject focus: Symmetry
_________________________________________________________________
Integrated Subject(s)(optional): Reading, Social Studies
______________________________________________________________________________
Unified Objective(s): The
students will demonstrate their knowledge of symmetry by answering the quiz questions
at the end of the lesson. MA-M-2.1.4
_____________________________________________________________________________
Program of Studies: M-8-GM-5
Students will investigate transformations' congruence, proportionality,
and similarity (e.g., enlargements, reductions, proportional triangles) in a
coordinate plane.

Teaching Strategies/Activities (describe the strategy/activity and how long
it will take to teach)
1. Review (3 minutes): Yesterday we learned
about parallel lines. We discovered how to identify vertical angles and
corresponding angles.
2. Preview (2 minutes): Today's lesson will be in the computer lab where
we will study symmetry. There will be a variety of websites available to
investigate further.
3. Teaching Activities (41 minutes):
A. (5 min.): The teacher will pass out the disc necessary
for the electronic learning center and I will also remind the students of the
lab rules. We will make our way to the computer lab.
B. (5 min.): The students will begin on the electronic
learning center by inserting the disc and bringing it up on the computer.
I will move around the room and assist anyone having difficulty working
their computer. The students will be reading the instruction at this
point.
C. (31 min.): The students will be engaged in the learning
center activities. They will follow the instructions in the assignment
portion of the center. I will be monitoring the room to assist as needed
and to keep the students on task. This learning center is for individual
development and exploration so my involvement will be limited.
4. Review (4 minutes): Today you used the electronic learning center to
investigate and learn about symmetry. This also provided you with the
opportunity to see how symmetry is used in other countries and cultures as well
as in the United States.
Diversity: This lesson is multicultural. The students will learn how symmetry is important in oriental carpet making and Islamic star patterns called Taprats. The students will also discover how symmetry is crucial in their own lifestyles and interests like art or construction.
HOTS: Compare and contrast the use symmetry as it pertains to the making of luxary items such as automobiles.
Enrichment/Remediation: There will be
internet sites available to students who finish early or needs help.
______________________________________________________________________________
Context (where does this lesson fit within a unit?)
This is the fourth lesson in the unit "The
Shapes of Our Lives--Geometry" and is tying together previously learned
materials with other cultures and provides the foundation for future lessons.
______________________________________________________________________________
Media, Materials, Resources (technology): This lesson requires the use of the electronic
learning center along with specific website searches.
______________________________________________________________________________
Assessment Tasks: The students will provide a copy of the questions they
answer at the end of the websearch.
The students will take a quiz at the end of the lesson.
Kera Goals: 1.Use Basic Math and Communication Skills; 2. Apply Core Concept and Principles
Academic Expectations: 1.5 Math Ideas/Procedures; 2.9 Space/Dimensionality
