Grade: Fifth Class: Art Length: 3 sessions 50 minutes each
Unit Theme: Native American Cultures
Subject Focus: Archeological Artifacts
Integrated Subjects: Archeology
Core Content Addressed: AH-E-4.2.32 Purposes of Art, AH-E-4.2.34 Cultures
Unified Objective: Students will demonstrate understanding of Native American purposes for art and other objects by creating artifacts to be included in a burial mound, which will be assessed on craftsmanship and creativity.
Teaching Strategies / Activities:
Preview: Teacher will review previous lesson, including virtual learning experience (vle), to begin this lesson looking at archeological artifacts that may be found in burial mounds. (5 minutes)
Introduction: Teacher will allow students discuss their findings from the vle’s to begin brainstorming on the artifacts that they want to be included in their class burial mound. Ask intrinsically motivating questions: Does your culture hunt or farm? What religious beliefs do they have? Reincarnation? What objects are found in their every day lives? What about bones? Get students thinking about what objects they want to include and start making a list of things to make. (20 minutes)
1. Students will begin to fashion artifacts out of whatever medium is necessary to achieve desired artifact. Students will be given the choice to make whatever they want off of the list. If they enjoyed he coil pots, then they can make some more coil pots. Every student must be responsible for making something in this three day lesson. If it is an elaborate sculpture that takes three days, then that’s fine. If it’s fifty arrowheads, that’s fine too. They get to do what they want! (15 minutes)
Review: Teacher will go back over what ideas came up on the list,
and will ask for any more ideas. At this point, every student should
have taken responsibility for making something during the next two sessions.
(10 minutes)
Day 2.
Preview / Introduction: Review list from previous session, and
remind students to take responsibility for making something for the burial
mound. (5 minutes)
1. Students continue making artifacts to be included in burial mound. (40 minutes)
Review: Teacher will go back over the ideas that were originally on the list and check to see if anymore ideas have come about. Check progress on existing list and see if objects aren’t being made. If so, people without artifacts in progress may be assigned things to make. (10 minutes)
Day 3.
Preview / Introduction: Teacher will go over list of artifacts
for burial one last time and make sure that students will have completed
enough artifacts to make the burial mound exciting and revealing.
(10 minutes)
1. Students will finish making objects to be included in burial mound. (30 minutes)
Review: Teacher will remind students of burial mound project that is to come. Process is outlined in the vle that students have access to on school or classroom computer. Teacher will also guide students in class critique over artifacts that they have made using criteria on checklist. (10 minutes)
